Revelation: mask, off!

6 October 2007, 11:40 am. View comments. Filed under Internet, Personal, Work.

I look around... And I see that online aliases are no longer popular. Here and there, bloggers are displaying their real names and I'm sort of "stuck" with my alias from 2002, and it's getting into me.

So, here's the revelation of the day: Cheryl Sun. That's my name "officially released" on the site. I didn't like "Cheryl" because it started with the big fat "C" and it made me feel like a sphere. I couldn't be a snowman because I don't have white skin, and chocolate snowman's just plain retarded.

Some friends started calling me "RylRyl" back then, and since I was into the series Anne of Green Gables, I decided to take up Anne's daughter's name "Rilla". I sort of got turned off now because there's a site named GorillaRilla.Com. Just a note though, RylRyl is not cute, do not call me that.

I don't mean to say those calling me Rilla should now call me Cheryl. I just present you with more than one option now. :P

Well, as I'm blogging about my real life and I have my real photographs all over the place, it feels more comfortable without a mask over my identity. But I'm not going to replace "Rilla" with "Cheryl" everywhere on the site because searching "Cheryl" on Google won't display my site on the first page of results. :P

Bwahaha. I just got a job from one of the six places I applied at. It's a nice little store called Flying Saucers. The website is bad, I know, but it sells a lot of luxury and novelty items and the shop is simply lovely. Except I haven't actually gotten anything from there before. I have price considerations...

emigawd. I always thought Rilla was your real name. I really have to read the pages of your website more thoroughly. If you search 'Alex' on Google, I don't even know what page I'm on. It's good that I have a really common name. However, if you search my full name, I'm the very first one that comes up. >< No wonder so many of my school friends have found my blog... So, does this mean I have to call you Cheryl now?

The name Rilla is so tightly associated with you in my mind that I was quite surprised when I read this post. XD I was like, "Wait, Rilla wasn't her real name? Oh ... right ... it wasn't."

RylRyl is hard to say. But it's not THAT bad. My alias, which I use with nearly all my online services and game accounts, is Tsuyu, so my friends call me "Yuyu". Now THAT is a dumb nickname. =.=

"Hey Yuyu! Yes, YOU! YOU YOU! HAHAHAHAHA!"

    Uggggh.

Eww people... Get away. Don't you think Rilla is such a stupid real name? I actually have real friends calling me that sometimes. *faints*

(Lol my verification code is currently 5PU6UP. 5 poo 6 up. :) )

Eh, you will just have to get used to me calling you Rilla here and Cheryl in email. I doubt if I will be able to get used to calling you Cheryl all the time. I have known you as Rilla for over five years. I doubt if you will ever get people to stop calling you Rilla online. But RylRyl, I will have to remember that next time I send you an email, lol. I am feeling a onerny email coming to you *wink*.

Hev isn't my real name either. I have also seen how sites are putting their "real" names up. I am still not comfortable with that idea. But I will give you my first name. It is Heather. My mother gave me my nickname of Hev though where she got it from I do not know.

I forgot to tell you congrats on the job, Cheryl (see I remembered this time).

    Way to go.

Online people can call me either way it's both fine. But Hev, *strangles joo*

Cheryl is a pretty name, and RylRyl is cute... It really is cute, but I'll refrain from calling you that.

I chucked my online alias in favor of my real name not too long ago. I was just sick of going by a random nickname that I had since I was 9, and I hated hearing people actually say it.

    Congrats on the job. Woo!

Cheryl? O.o I would have had a completely different picture of you in my head had I known your name was Cheryl rather than Rilla. Cheryl reminds me of...cherries.

My online alias used to be Bliss of all things (short for Blissenobiarella, but that's a story for another day) — you wouldn't believe the amount of "Bliss is ignorance lawlz!" cracks I used to get.

And I don't think Rilla wouldn't be a stupid real life name!

I think I've never called you Rilla before.. ever lol
But I think RylRyl is pretty good... considering what I get lol.
    few examples:
    Jondo's (don't even ask.. I haven't got a clue)
OH! Johnny (.. people just love to do that with my surname)
I think that's enough to get my message across lol.
Oh and congrats again getting offered to such an awesome place ;)

I'll keep calling you Rilla because that's how I've come to know you (unless you don't want to be called so in the future!). I'm the opposite of you, I have no problems with displaying my name, but I absolutely do not put pictures of myself online.

I started using my real name relatively early on, maybe because my online alias back in the day was SO STUPID. It was "The Vampiress" yup. *barf*

Lmao, that GorillaRilla website is priceless. Congrats on the job!

I think I'll keep calling you Rilla. Sounds nicer, in my opinion. And it's just how I've come to know you :3

In response to your comment: Aww you wanted to give me the award? =P Thanks RylRyl! *ducks blow* I won't call you that again! Promise!

I think it's going to be hard for people who have come to know you as Rilla call you Cheryl, but it is nice to know! I never assumed Rilla was only an alias.

Honestly, I wish I had used an alias. It would've been a smarter move on my behalf and a lot of things of the past could have been avoided... but it's probably too late in the game to do that now though.

This kind of makes me feel like I'm being re-introduced to you! So, hello Cheryl, I'm Tracey, nice to meet you! ;)

Although I already knew your name was Cheryl from facebook anyway :P

Yeah, aliases aren't as popular anymore. I would never want to use one though because being that my site and blog is about me and is personal, it always felt silly to have people not know my real name.

Cheryl is a nice name ^^ Last time my sister and I played this game where we needed English names and I chose Cheryl because I like the colour of cherries and there's my initials in it (C and Y)

RylRyl is hard to pronounce. Haha, but it sounds so...amiable =D My online aliases has so far been my name in two spellings and also dTsuyu whereby people call me dT only

    Wow, that's such a change.

"Rilla's name is Cheryl, Rilla's name is Cheryl." *keeps repeating*

Don't worry, everyone. With the email I just sent to Rilla, she is going to hate me. *ducks the many fists of Rilla* She is going to hate me for my silliness. I am glad we are friends, Rilla. Otherwise you may just hate me. Just remember Rilla dear, I am your friend. I am just being silly. It is all in fun.

I used to be obsessed with the Anne series! Way back before Harry Potter. It's great actually. Really recommend it to anybody. Unfortunately to me you'll always be Rilla. You even look like a Rilla (not that I know what exactly a 'Rilla' looks like). :P

The truth COMES OUT!!!! *gasp* Ha ha. Aliases rock, but now that I'm older, I don't feel the need for one either. I mean, when I was 12, it was a big deal because of paedophiles and such, but now I'm an adult, so... why hide? I used to go by Ash (since my name is pronounced "Ashleen") which is more common than Aisling, and therefore less easy to track, but now I don't really care. Not that I want stalkers, or anything!

    Congrats on the new job!

I'll just think of Rilla is a nickname for Cheryl, just like Nellie is a nickname for Darnielle.

I agree with Amber, you look like a Rilla! :P

In my mind you'll forever be labelled "wildx Rilla". Even if you change domains, I'll still think of you as wildx lol.

Though aren't you worried about real-life people stalking you on the intarwebz?! OMG CHERYL SUN, OO YOU WORK AT ____ *jots down evil plans*... haha.

Congrats on the job!! Wooo! Though maybe you'll start buying stuff there seeing as you may have a staff discount... ;)

    Take care

I never had an alias because I didn't feel the need to have one? Haha, I don't know for some reason, when someone gets stuck with an alias, they seem to be different when called with their real name?

I have a few online friends, who after three years, I still call by their online names because their real name just seems so different :P

    I like Cheryl, it's a pretty name :3

  25. Rilla. 7 October 2007, 9:14 pm

    gravatar icon

Lol no, not afraid of real life people stalking me. They can stalk me all they like on the net, because I'll just stalk them back in real life with spy-cams.

  26. Autumn. 7 October 2007, 10:12 pm

Rilla's a nice alias. Cheryl's a nice name too! I'm going to stick to calling you Rilla though. Not used to it. Hehe.

I used to use my real name.. actually my offline friends stick to linking me with my real name. So, my initial intention of using alias is a little, pointless. But, now people would think twice before thinking that they're in the right site. I got spammed before - some jobless people came around and started criticizing me. They were from my school, for sure. It was bad experience.

I think it's strange using my alias really. Even weirder when one of my friends actually called me that.. just for fun.

    Congrats on your job!

When I first saw your name, "Rilla, my Rilla" was my first thought. I'm a huge Lucy Maude Montgomery fan XD I like her Emily books more than her Anne books though.

Congratulations on your new job~ I've never had a real one, just tutoring an elementary kid in the summer once.

Why is it that when I read your name, I had a strange feeling I'd read it somewhere before?

Oh wait, you're on Facebook, yes? *facepalm* *goes to add*

RylRyl ... I don't know, it has a distinctly cutesy-poo, generalised "clique of middle-aged women with rich golfing husbands gathering every day in one of their living rooms for brunch/lunch with perfect manicures and cats with poofy hair" sort of sound to it. I'll refrain from it. And as for Rilla ... hrrm. I'm actually not sure whether or not I'll change the link around, but that's for another comment.

As a ... somewhat bizarre thought/tangent ... can I call you Cher? XD

I jest. And congratulations on the new job! A heck of a lot better than something like fast food, well done, girl. *exaggerated English accent*

:o Cheryl makes me think Shirley Temple or something like that. XD Was it Sherry or Shirley?

Fear my alias! And awesome job! :] I want to go work wherever my friends are going to work at [as long as it isn't fast food place o.o I wonder what would it be like to be a waitress at a high end restaurant :o] I'm too scared to babysit for anyone! @.@ I'm always afraid I'll kill the child and they parents would file a lawsuit against me or something....

And lol at Xuan's post! X] Rich golfing husbands!

Yeah... I'd soo love a rich golfing hubby with a Persian cat on my lap while I'm lying on a nice Victorian couch.

A waitress at a high end restaurant would be nice. There's this restaurant I simply love for all the hottie waiters working there. If you work there then I expect you get to hang around those good-looking people...

Congratulations on the job and welcome to the world of the employed. Just remember that school should always come first. Sorry, the parent in me surfaces occasionally. To me you will always be known as Rilz since that is the name I knew you as first.

Congrats on landing a job. I too have recently gotten a job.

Cheryl is a nice name I think. It somehow reminds me of Sheryl Temple though. I like Rilla too, and I think I'm going to stick with Rilla.

  34. Kiera. 9 October 2007, 8:04 am

I've never hidden behind an online alias only because Kiera is a shorten form of my real name that I use offline as well. I could never use my real name online because it's not common and it would make me way too easy to find.

    Congrats on the new job!

i never made myself an online alias! Gosh, that would've been neat. I know Juice (from yummeh.net) is actually justine. But that's the only person (that i know of) that has actually said they're using (or have used) an aka. The rest might all be using aliases for all i know. :|

  38. Imdolien. 9 October 2007, 6:22 pm

I can't say I'm willing to out my real name just yet. One people I don't trust Internet ppls :P and two because I actually do like my real name, but its rare and could probably be traced back to me really easily.
That and Imdolien has kind of become an extension of my personality. Its almost like my internal self, which is more creative and more emotional than I am in real life. I like the idea of an alias, and it keeps those who know too much from knowing more. I just like blog readers, I don't need people in my life reading up on me.

  39. Rilla. 9 October 2007, 7:03 pm

    gravatar icon

Yeah unfortunately, many people in my life know I'm Rilla. Or I should make up a totally new alias. :)
