How the Internet kills time

20 November 2007, 3:13 pm. View comments. Filed under Internet, Web-related.

This is a breakdown of how I currently waste my life on the web.

Profile sites

  1. Facebook: I log on at least once a day. The Facebook applications are such life-wasters, but I still love them.
  2. Bebo: to be honest, it's boring. But I log on whenever I get an email notification for a new comment, etc.

Forums

  1. Snark: we all love Snark. How can you not love Snark? It's one place where people actually understand what you're talking about. (Because everyone pretty much speaks the language of gibberish.)
  2. Happy Mapling: lots of idiots, lots of bums, lots of fun.

Bookmarking sites

  1. del.icio.us: now when I search for things, I tend to look in del.icio.us first, Google second. Because the sites bookmarked by more people tend to be better, I guess.
  2. Digg: not so much actually, but there can be interesting articles around.

Art communities

  1. deviantART: always new additions, always amazing hence I always visit. I'm not quite happy that it's usually just the popular and "well-respected" artists that clog the front-page. It's harder to find other new but great artists.
  2. Skyefairy: for an art community much closer to the web circle I'm in (or was in). It covers up for the downside I pointed out for deviantART.

For most of the above, my username is wildx22. Actually, that's my username for almost anything.

That doesn't seem like a long list, but I sure as hell spend hours on them each day; plus the MSN, reading other sites I subscribed to and of course, recently admiring Rikkye's new layout... I have no life because the Internet sucked it away from me.

So how does the Internet kill your time? (That's laying the blame on the Internet, not me. :P)

Snark is my enemy and my best friend, ha ha. I love it so much, but it makes it hard for me to get stuff done. Now, I have no choice, since I am no longer at home during the day, but I definitely miss it.

I used to be terribly addicted to Facebook while I was travelling, because I always wanted to keep tabs on my friends. I would spend hours, at work, on it. My obsession has cooled since then, thankfully!

I think out of all those sites, I spend a bulk of my time on Snark and Deviantart. A large part of my online activity is reading blogs.

Snaaark! Blog-reading. MSN. Emails (I'm old school, I know). Facebook.

I think that covers it. I don't use delicious or digg and those kinds of sites at all...

xD Oh dear... the internet kills my time by giving me a long list of anime and movies and shows to watch... instead of doing my homework.

I'm a news junkie. Of course, every log on to the internet must be accompanied by a quick browse on Snark. :P

I often spend hours reading blogs and posting comments on them. I also love "discovering" new websites, surfing DeviantArt (just to tell myself my artwork sucks), talking to my friends on Windows Live Messenger and playing iSketch. I also LOVE adding things to my wishlist at Wishlistr (hopefully I shall get the things I put on my wishlist one day). :D

Blog reading and commenting is the first thing I do when I turn the computer on after having read the news. I check after updates on Snark all the time, and I check the sites I subscribe to too.

The interwebz is evil! It consumes all my time and then runs away. My list would somehow resemble yours. It would include Facebook and Myspace, Deviantart, Snark, Stumble upon, Tumblr, and many many CSS inspiration gallery that make me go directly to photoshop and waste another good portion of my time.

I'm not much of a facebook fan. I think that's because I've never really actually spent much time on there.

I have to look into some of those other sites you've mentioned. I know about Deviantart, del.ico.us, and bebo. I guess I'm not much of a website browsing type of person unless they're personal websites lol

I used to be a complete myspace addict, haven't been on their much recently though. I also don't go on MSN much anymore. Wow, I don't even realise what I do on the internet now days...I must waste so much time :P

Checking if my sites have new comments, reading email, visiting everybody else's sites... (see? here I am!).

So, if you're talking unproductive stuff, read above. If you mean productive, working on SF. SF has taken me over and stolen my soul. XP

I'd say social networking and research eat up my time. I do a lot of research for work and school so I guess the research really isn't a waste of time.

Well, if you waste time at least you get to waste time with friends eh? (L) I spend all day on the internet. For example today, I spent the majority of the day adding books to Book Craze. Then I admired (shocked) over Rikkye's new design. Next I am here. Hee, am I wasting my time? Yep, but it is with those I consider my friends.

My websites (besides CHNL, I've got my company's and Life Allows) suck huge, huge amounts of time - between reading SEO & better blogging articles to optimize my website, commenting and responding to comments, blogging itself, writing articles, tweaking layouts, and adding new content, you've got hours and hours taken away right there.

The way I see it, those websites are either making me money (directly or indirectly) or will be making me money - It's worth it for me to put my time into them, but it still doesn't change the fact that they take so much of it up!

Next to that, I read a lot of stuff on FictionPress and FanFiction. After that on the "time sucking scale" comes your usual facebook, Snark, and sometimes MSN. (I've never really been one to waste copious amounts of time on social networking sites.)

Oh, and that reminds me: I hate Facebook applications and wish they would die. I'm way oldschool. :P

Blogs, Maple Story, MSN and more Maple Story. Oh, and I also watch random shows and dramas online. The internet's far more interesting most of the times... no wonder I cram my homework at 11 pm :P

Facebook, myspace, MSN, blogs, validating code, adding site content...

    5% Snark
    10% My blog
    20% My other websites
30% Clients work and websites etc
    10% Work and research
20% Surfing and reading other blogs.
    5 % Other

I don't use myspace, bebo, facebook or any of that social stuff.
I do check out deviantArt every now and then, as well as vexels.net, and I occasionally visit millionmasterpice but really half my time is doing stuff to my websites or my clients which wastes hours and hours. When I am bored I just read blog to blog haha

Reading other blogs is probably #1, though email/IM comes in as a close second. I don't spend as much time updating my own site as I should...

Sure, we tend to spend time on the internet but its better than watching a television right?

Sooner or later, internet shall overtake the television according to Al Gore.

Don't forget that youtube kills major time in comparison to other websites :P
