Death of spirits

What happened to all the joyful spirits we used to have on our happy holidays?

Valentines Day

Back when I was still in the junior years of high school, lots of people sent chocolates and roses to their lovers within the school. In 2006, this event didn't go on but I guess I wasn't in a position to complain since I still received a bunch of roses from a "Secret Admirer". (I never found out who he was.) In 2007, Valentines Day was dead.

Not only has the Valentines spirit died down, but this modern era is in absolute lack of romance. What's wrong with cliche romantic ideas of evening strolls on the beach or some steaming hot sex kissing on the sand? Perhaps a candlelit dinner or handing your credit card over to the girl? Sadly, it's all about clubbing, binging and drunk-driving these days.

Help save romance: the next time you see an attractive person, walk up to him/her and say "I love you".

Halloween

We still have leftover packs of biscuits and chocolates in our cupboard. I think we had ten kids come to our door on Halloween this year; some of my friends had none. In my trick-or-treating years, the streets of 31st October were filled with kiddy ghosts and baby monsters. Nowadays however, it's as if big ghosts and monsters don't reproduce anymore.

Merry Christmas Hohoho!

Not a single customer expressed Christmas excitement when I asked how their Christmas shopping was going. Playing the same old Christmas music in every single retail store for three weeks isn't going to help raise shopping spirits either. What sucks even more, New Zealand and Australia have white-free Christmases under the Summer sun.

Cold truth is, people are "maturing" by growing out of these fun spirits. Kids like me are sticking to Pokemon Crystal instead and those Asian parents of mine fail at singing Christmas carols. But with all the ranting aside, hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too :)

I think soon the three spirits that visited Ebenezer Scrooge will haunt everyone for losing the holiday spirits, especially Christmas :(

Ah yes. The olde days. This is in my perspective.

Valentines Day - Truly lack of romances.

Halloween - Back then we see scary costumes but now young girls want to be more sexy along with their costumes.

December Holidays - Because religion has different holidays, it is creating the war on christmas. Most people would say "Merry Christmas" because they assume everybody is christian. Now, it is better to say "Happy Holidays" since it is supposed to respect other religious cultures. And the christmas tree is now a holiday tree.

Slowly, I am starting to lose my mind. But regardless, Happy Holidays. (Note: Not everybody is christian)

    メリー・クリスマス!!!
It is sad, but true that the youth of today no longer want to stay cute little kiddies for long, as the pop idols and those skinny models (referring to girls) that grace the covers of magazines 'inspire' budding youths to try their hand at appealing to the opposite sex. And for males, because of all the computer games and movie heroics shown on screens everywhere, they have grown to be too 'cool' for old traditions. But what is lost in translation is that little kiddies who have not yet hit puberty should not be looking 'sexy', but rather preserve their days of youth and cuteness. They should not be trying to act tough when all the bigger folk are around to protect them. Our world is slowly becoming devoured by the epitome of evil, that is the power of the images shown on screen and on paper.
I wish you a Merry Christmas, young one. May 2008 bring you more happiness.

*PS. Please don't take what I just typed seriously, it just all came out and I have no idea why I said it. Although reading back... it IS rather true XD

I know exactly what you mean, Rilla. Though I have never liked Valentine's Day. All Hallows Eve is my favorite though, but that is my pagan part of me, lol. Christmas is so-so because people are just "gimme gimme" anymore and seem to forget that it is better to give then to receive.

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year Rilla. Have a safe one.

You know, you're SO right. The holidays these days aren't what they used to be. When I was little they were hugely celebrated but nowadays they're really dull...

I wonder if it seems the "spirit" of all the holidays/special days is dying down because I'm getting older, or because it actually is.

Enjoy your holidays! But please, restrict your "I love you"s to people you actually know ;)

I especially noticed since last year that Christmas has been really dead in Australia. I remember years ago, Christmas night TV was filled to the brim with live showings of Christmas events that happened around the city. Now... nothing much. It's really odd.

We have a wonderful time around Christmas. In Denmark we have no tradition for Valentine's day but ever since I had my daughter Christmas have been all about making it amazing to the children and to them lights, songs and Santa is still worth more than all the presents under the tree.

I went trick-or-treating this year even though I had a killer science test the next day. :D I was so tired the next day, that I couldn't concentrate on my test... but it was worth it!

Since I'm only in junior high (and not allowed to date... but we do it anyways), we don't really do anything for Valentine's Day. I do, however, randomly walk up to people and say 'I love you' though. It's fun watching their awkward and shocked expressions. I felt bad once though, because I said it to this one girl that actually kind-of-sorta liked me... Awkward x 1000.

My Christmas spirit is... 0. We don't have a tree, decorations, or even presents. Well, we have presents, but we buy them after Christmas for some reason. Last year, we had decorations, a real decorated tree, and all the other Christmas trimmings. >< I did, however, go caroling this year. :D I can't sing, so I feel bad for the people who's doors we knocked on.

    Merry Christmas!

The world just seems to be maturing... I remember way back when I was probably 11 or so, and the queue to sit on Santa's lap was huge. Now everywhere I went with a Santa-in-a-mall, there were like 5 kids in total. Same with the other holidays: the amount of products and crap you can buy increases as the spirit and real meaning of the holiday decreases.

"Kids like me are sticking to Pokemon Crystal instead"

Yess! Crystal > Ruby etc. The original 150 + perhaps the next gen is ENOUGH. Now there are crazy things like look like raccoons and hearts. WTF?! I love Pokemon Crystal <3

=O It's sad to hear that. Over here, all those holidays are still very spirited and festive.

But, regardless—-Merry Christmas, Rilla! =] May all your wishes come true.

I guess people have begun to see the commercialism behind these holidays... It's just not fun anymore. Maybe we should make some new ones up? Ones than include less buying and more cultural meaning.

    :) Merry Christmas, though.

I know what you mean... although it's been a lot more noticeable for me with Valentine's day. Does anyone celebrate that anymore? I know people who break up with their couples a some days before feb 14th and then get together some days after, so they don't have to give anything to each other. Horrible...

Halloween is not very trick-o-treat-y these days anymore, but I know a lot of people who keep the tradition around here. Christmas is a lot better though, my favorite time of the year XD I like it that people here celebrate it like they do!

Anyway, Merry Christmas to you Rilla!
    *hugs*

Can't say that either Christmas or Valentines has ever been a big thing for me. The family doesn't celebrate but my friends and I would gather and have ourselves some fun. On the actual day, I stayed home with my mother and we had BBQ buns. I really would have liked a Christmas tree, though.

As for Halloween, our family finally moved out of the alley way so it's the first time I handed out candy. I was rather excited about it. I can't compare the volume since I have nothing to compare it to. But it was pretty awesome. Haha, handing out candy that is.

Haha, and I thought it was only me who felt these traditions slipping away.
I'm one of those people who don't celebrate anything though... from my own family habits, since we are not religious or etc, long story, but we don't celebrate stuff (everyday should be appreciated, not just on -one- day right?).

But for those different festivities, I'd often do something special for the people I cared about, or give gifts, because I truly want to and feel like it. If I give a present it's because I truly want to, not because I -have- to. Otherwise I don't give anything. And the gifts are often things that have some deeper meaning, an inside joke, something personal. Oh how it bugs me when people say, "oh its your birthday/some celebration, I gotta get you something... what do you want?". Most people can afford things they really want for themselves, I still believe it should be the thought put into it that counts. I'd rather someone spend one hour of their time on me than something money can buy =)

Hey, congratulations on getting in Law!! Well done =)

The economy has been doing really bad for the past year. Holidays are an indulgence for those with money.

Are you SURE that going up to a random attractive person and telling them you love them isn't a little bit O_o? Hah.

I'm with Kaylee - I think it might be because we're getting older, and all the fun of childhood and holidays is separating ... but then again you see twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings who're enamoured with V-Day and such, so then you wonder if it's possible to get that fun back, or if they just can't let go of that mentality.

Anyway. Either way! Happy New Year, Ryl-Ryl. *hug*

It's sad that holiday cheer everywhere has begun to disappear (lol, a tad too much on the rhyming?). I think it's because everything has become way too commercialized. The focus is put on the buying rather than the celebrating.
