This is a villain's fairytale.

In a time when the book market is oversaturated with Beauty and the Beast and Hades & Persephone retellings (don’t get me wrong, I like these too but there are too many for me to keep up with now), I really appreciate coming across creative retellings of less popular fairytales. So I’d been looking forward to this one for a while—a loose retelling of The Goose Girl.

I loved the writing style of this one so much, with the way it mixes the omni perspective we see in traditional fairytales and the snarky voice of our incredibly flawed protagonist, Vanja.

In fact, all the characters are pretty flawed, which is part of what made this such a fun read. I mean, Vanja is a thief and an imposter (she stole a whole princess’ life and identity), and she develops a love/hate relationship with Emeric, a junior prefect who is investigating her crimes and could see through her lies. Dat tension 👌

There are also super sweet friendships and queer relationships in this story, plus many clever plot twists. It has everything.

Unfortunately, I don't have everything. Certainly not a giant ruby to feature along with this book. But I do have a rose salt lamp that could maybe, sort of (but not really) pass as a giant jewel that Vanja could’ve stolen.

This is a super late review as it's been a couple of months since I finished reading this duology. I wanted to see how long it would take until I fully got over this story and even now, I'm still not over the ending of it.

The Celestial Kingdom duology delivers intense action and adventure, touching relationships (between family, friends and lovers), and the most beautiful, heart-wrenching romance. The writing and prose are absolute perfection. Reading this put me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and the last chapters turned me into a sobbing mess.

I normally hate the love triangle trope, but this is a golden example of a love triangle done well.

Together with Iron Widow, this duology sits firmly at the top as my favourite Asian fantasy books. Sue Lynn Tan is now one of my auto-buy authors and I can’t wait for more releases from her.
